Canadian actor Emmanuel Kabongo chatted about starring in the critically-acclaimed Canadian series “Chateau Laurier,” and being a part of the digital age.

‘Chateau Laurier’

The synopsis is: When a grand hotel opens in 1912 Ottawa it represents all that was extravagant and privileged at the dawn of a new century. Chateau Laurier is a lush short-form dramatic series, a gripping family saga set against the backdrop of Edwardian romance, mystery and the thirst for power.

“Chateau Laurier” was co-created and written by Kent Staines and Emily Weedon. The show is available on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Google Play.

How was your experience in “Chateau Laurier”?

My experience on the show was truly one of a kind. I had never heard of the Chateau Laurier before this opportunity, so having the chance to film in the hotel while staying in it for a few days was exquisite and special. I also formed some tremendous relationships with the people I worked with.

What did you like most about your character?

The role of Gabriel was such an honor to take on. I really had fun with the fact that he was such an eccentric, unpredictable and explosive character. In my personal life I can sometimes be an introvert and very private and this character gave me an opportunity not only to entertain, but to also learn new aspects and personality traits of myself. “Chateau Laurier” gave me a chance to stretch.

What was it like working with James Stewart as director?

Working with James was such a treat! It was my first time meeting him and being directed by him. We hit it off right away and I really respected his approach and style of directing. He’s what I call an “actor’s director.”

James understands the work that goes into forming depth and subtext within the characters, so the dialogue he uses with his actors is different from how he would communicate with his crew. I’d work with him again on a drop of dime. A part of me wishes I was part of the first season of Chateau Laurier but everything happens for a reason.

How does it feel to be an actor in the digital age? (Now with streaming and technology being so prevalent)

It feels great for me. As long as I get the opportunity to work and do what I love, I go with flow. I’m grateful and I’ve got no complaints. With Chateau Laurier on AppleTV, fans and viewers can view it wherever they please.

What do your plans for the future include?

Interestingly enough, James and I just collaborated together on my first feature length film called “SWAY”. He’s one of the producers and I’m so lucky to have him be part the project. We filmed SWAY in 7 days in Toronto. We are hoping to get into some great festivals and find a home for it.

The experience of producing and staring in my own project has really inspired me to continue on this path. I learned so much from it a really developed a passion for it. So now I’m gearing up for a new project and this time I’m writing, producing, directing, and acting it. I’m really excited for what is to come.

What is your advice for young and aspiring actors?

Learn and experience as much as you can, without harming yourself or others of course. Read lots of books, acting books especially if you can’t afford classes. Watch films, documentaries, see plays and try to find a community of actors be a part of.

Never take no for an answer, respectfully, of course. Always remember you’re unique and interesting in your own special way.

Remain honest with yourself and don’t just work hard, work smart. Seek to gain knowledge from friends, peers, mentors and if you can afford it, take acting workshops.

With the improvements of technology, you don’t have to be in an in-person class, you can do workshops online. Lastly, don’t compare yourself to other because comparison is a thief of joy. Allow yourself be inspired by other actors.

Were there any moments in your career that helped define you?

There’s been so many pivotal moments that have definitely shifted the path of the rollercoaster ride. This career is all peaks and valleys. Sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down.

What’s important is to keep flowing and remain steady. At this point of my career, I feel like taking on the producer/actor role in my film SWAY, has positioned me to play this game on whole new level.

Which actors would you like to someday work with as your dream acting partners?

There’s so many people I’d love a chance to share the screen with, work for, or be directed by. With so much new content always coming out, I constantly discover so many new faces and talents that I’d love to work with. If I was to give you a list, it would fill up this entire interview page.

To name a few of the people I admire, the list is as follows; Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington, Christopher Nolan, Guy Ritchie, Viola Davis, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Ryan Coogler, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Idris Elba, Tom Cruise, Lupita Nyong’o, Jordan Peele, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Hardy and many others. As I said, the list is endless.

What does the word success mean to you?

Success to me is a solid relationship with God, health, marriage, grounded family and loving and being loved by those I care for. Career is important too of course, it’s the cherry on top.

What would you like to tell our readers about “Chateau Laurier”? What’s the one thing you want them to get out of it?

Chateau Laurier is unpredictable and fresh. Anyone who watches with will relate not only to the characters but also the story.

Is there anything else you would like to say or add that we did not cover?

Be grateful. Life can be hard and very challenging and we all have our struggles, even those we deem to be “successful” have their fair share of heartaches. Be grateful for breath and do the best you can with what you have and where you are. Yes, we all fall short and miss the mark sometimes, but give yourself grace by being kind to yourself and seek help if you need it.

The world is very sensitive, especially with the advancement of technology. Being vulnerable with others does not make you weak, but you must have wisdom and discernment with who you open up to.

As a believer of Jesus Christ, I do my best to treat others the way I expect to be treated. I also make it a thing to use my talents not only to entertain others but to mainly glorify and magnify the kingdom of God.
